Past: First elected to 6th National Parliament in the 1997 General Elections as an independent, then joined the People's Democratic Movement. Appointed Minister for National Planning and Implementation from December 1997 till April 1998. Then Minister for Fisheries from April 1998 to June 1999. PDM deputy leader (Southern region) from 1997. Elected parliamentary Leader of People's Democratic Movement in May 1998. Elected Prime Minister on the 14/07/1999. Minister for Finance and Treasury from July 1999. Minister for Health from July to December 1999, Minister for Home Affairs from December 1999 till March 2000. Minister for Privatisation and Corporatisation from March 2000 - April 2000. Relinquished Finance to Mr. Kumbarkor on the 19/12/2000. Appointed member of the Privy Council by the Queen in September 2001. Re-elected to the 7th National Parliament in the 2002 General Elections for the same seat as a People's Democratic Movement candidate. Member and Leader of Papua New Guinea Party when party name changed from PDM in November 2003. Elected Leader of Opposition, served as Shadow Minister for Treasury, Shadow Minister for Public Service and Shadow Minister for Petroleum and Energy after the formation of the Somare/Marat government in August 2002 till the 18/5/2004 when PNGP joined the Somare government. Appointed National Capital District Commission-Chairman in 2004 till August 2006 (G165, 2006). Re-elected to the 8th National Parliament in the 2007 General Elections for the same seat as a Papua New Guinea Party candidate. Elected Leader of Opposition and appointed Shadow Minister for Public Enterprise on the 18/09/2007. Relinquish opposition leadership on 11/05/2011. Appointed Minister for Public Enterprise on the 5/8/2011 in the O'Neill-Namah cabinet.
Tertiary Education: Honorary Doctorate of Technology, PNG University of Technology (1987), University of Papua New Guinea (1970).
Achievements: Bachelor of Economics from University of Papua New Guinea 1970. Awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Technology from the PNG University of Technology in 1987. Awarded the Knight Bachelor in 1990. Conferred Honorary Doctorate in Economics by the University of Papua New Guinea in 2001.
