Building and Maintenance Division

 

The Building Maintenance & Technical Services Division is responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the Parliament building and precincts.

The Division is also tasked with the responsibility of managing and maintaining the physical assets of the National Parliament and the Parliamentary Service.

The Building Maintenance & Techical Services Division is made up of seven (7) specialized units, organized into two sub-divisions, Building Maintenance & Technical Services.

The Building Maintenance Services are Works, Gardening and Cleaning, while Transport, Electrical, Technical and Refrigeration make up the Technical Services.

The Director - Building Maintenance & Technical Services oversees the Division and reports to the Executive Director - Support Services.

Functions

  • Works: Carry out all the maintenance and minor renovation works in carpentry, joinery, welding, plumbing, painting and decoration.
  • Gardening: Provide gardening and landscaping services and ensure the general cleanliness of the Parliamentary building and its precincts.
  • Cleaning: Provide cleaning services in and around the Parliament building.
  • Transport: Ensure vehicles of the Parliamentary Servcie fleet, including vehicles for the Speaker and Clerk, are in good running condition and registered.
  • Refrigeration: Maintain the air-conditioning and refrigeraton systems and manage the cool rooms.
  • Electrical: Ensure all electrical appliances, lighting systems and standby generators are functional.
  • Technical: Ensure the Parliament House PA system, telephone system and TV and two-way radio systems are functional.

Maintenance

This section of the Building and Precincts Branch is responsible for all maintenance, plumbing, carpentry and minor renovation work required from time to time within the Parliament building.

Transport

Parliament operates a fleet of 25 vehicles ranging from cars to buses. The transport officer looks after the transport section and is responsible for coordinating transport for staff to and from work during session and non session periods. The transport section is also responsible for the official vehicles of the Clerk and the Speaker.

Technical Services

The Technical Services is responsible for:-

  • The maintenance of telephone facilities, TV and two-way radio systems within Parliament House,
  • Maintenance of public address system within Parliament House; records all the proceedings of meetings in the chamber and committee enquiry meetings
  • Maintain and provide advice and support to computer and information technology related services
