Inter-Parliamentary Relations

The Papua New Guinea National Parliament is a member and affiliate to various parliamentary associations and unions within the Commonwealth of Nations, regionally and within the international community at large.

The Inter-Parliamentary Relations Office (IPRO) conducts, maintains and promotes the Papua New Guinea National Parliament's relations with these bodies.

These include: the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Secretariat in the United Kingdom and CPA Australia- Pacific Secretariat in Australia; the Joint Parliamentary Assembly (JPA) between the African, Carribean and Pacific group of States (ACP) and the European Union (EU); and the International Parliamentary Union (IPU).

Functions

  • Prepare briefs for the Parliamentary delegations to conferences, meetings and seminars for all international agreements concerning in the Parliament
  • Maintain liaison with the CPA Secretariats in London, United Kingdom and Canberra, Australia (Australia-Pacific)
  • Maintain liaison with the ACP Secretariat in Brussels, Belgium concerning the ACP EU, Joint Parliamentary Assembly
  • Facilitate reciprocal political exchange programs between the Papua New Guinea Parliament and Parliaments within the Asia-Pacific region
  • Maintain liaison with the IPU Secretariat in Geneva, Switzerland
  • Maintain liaison with other Government agencies, especially the Department of Foreign Affairs
  • Facilitate bilateral visits by parliamentary delegations to Papua New Guinea including arranging for meetings and conferences hosted by the Papua New Guinea Parliament
