Sergeant At Arms Division

As the custodian of the Mace of the House; a symbol of Royal Authority and the authority of the House and Speaker, the Serjeant-at-Arms plays an important ceremonial role in Parliament.

It is the Serjeant-at-Arms who precedes the Speaker when he enters and leaves the Chamber at the beginning and end of a day's sitting.

The Serjeant-at-Arms also acts as the custodian of the Members' attendance register, allocates seats in the Chamber and keeps order during Sessions.

His protocol duties include assisting in organizing Members' travel arrangements for official duties abroad and ensuring members and other VIPs are accorded protocol services upon their arrival and departure at the airport.

The Serjeant-at-Arms also organizes and conducts excursions for those wanting to visit the Parliament House such as schools, churches and tourists.

Functions

  • Organize and assist in the Opening of Parliament Sessions and make announcements on the Floor of Parliament and outside of the Chamber
  • Organize the swearing-in of Members of Parliament after the General Elections and By-Elections or of Court-reinstated Members
  • Liaise with Government and Opposition Whips on the seating arrangements of Members in the Chamber
  • Ensure proper procedures are followed should a Member move sides
  • Ensure the Speaker's papers are kept in order 
  • Ensure VIPs and foreign dignitaries are accorded protocol services and liaise with other Government Departments in relation to visits by other dignitaries
  • Organize Parliament tours for VIPs, tourists and other visitors
  • Organize Members' bookings and usage of the conference rooms
