Reporting Division

The Reporting Division is established under Section 3(e) of the Parliamnetary Services Act 1997, to provide a reporting service for the Members of Parliament.

It is an essential part of Parliament tasked with the traditional role of of producing Hansard.

The main objective of the Division is to provide timely and accurate reports of the meetings of Parliament verbatim.

All members are given one week to input corrections to their speeches after the publication of the Draft Hansard.

The Division is also affiliated with the other Commonwealth Parliaments through the Commonwealth Hansard Editors Association (CHEA) where mutual interests are shared especially on new ideas and technologies for improved and best work practices.  

Functions

  • Capture the proceedings of Parliament; Firstly the daily proof during meetings and, secondly, the final volumes
  • Provide simultaneous interpretation in English, Pidgin and Motu during meetings of Parliament
  • Produce the Daily Draft and final Hansard Volumes
  • Provide transcription services for the inquiries of the various Parliamentary Committees for their reports
  • Liaise with both Government and Opposition Whips on the seating arrangement of Members of Parliament in the Chamber
  • Make available electronic or digital copies of Hansard publication on the National Parliament Website for public information

The Reporting Division may perform and exercise any other functions conferred by the Deputy Clerk-Chamber Services or the Clerk, consistent with the above.
