Health Committee launches TB Advocacy Media Strategy following high-level training

APPROVED FOR RELEASE BY HON. ROBERT NAGURI, MP - CHAIRMAN OF SPECIAL PARLIAMENTARY COMMITTEE ON HEALTH MATTERS

PORT MORESBY, Friday May 29th, 2026 | MEMBERS of the Special Parliamentary Committee on Health Matters and the PNG Parliamentary TB Caucus have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening Papua New Guinea’s response to Tuberculosis (TB) with the launch of a TB Advocacy Media Strategy following a high-level parliamentary advocacy training held at Parliament House this week.

The advocacy training brought together Members of Parliament (MPs), officials from the National Department of Health (NDOH), development partners and key health stakeholders to strengthen political leadership, parliamentary advocacy and coordinated national efforts towards ending TB in Papua New Guinea.

Committee Chairman Hon. Robert Naguri, MP, who also serves as Deputy Chair of the PNG TB Caucus, said the launch of the media strategy reflects Parliament’s growing commitment to ensuring TB remains a national priority.

“Tuberculosis continues to place a heavy burden on our people and our health system. Strengthening public awareness and political advocacy through the media is critical in driving action, accountability and investment towards ending TB in Papua New Guinea,” Hon. Naguri said.

The strategy builds on outcomes from the National TB Advocacy Workshop held earlier this year, where MPs, the NDOH, civil society organisations, development partners and international agencies identified the need for stronger political coordination and advocacy to address PNG’s growing TB burden.

The training highlighted the important role parliamentarians can play in strengthening legislation, budget oversight and public awareness campaigns to support national TB elimination efforts.

The advocacy engagements form part of the PNG Parliamentary TB Caucus Engagement Week, aimed at strengthening parliamentary leadership, increasing sustainable financing, improving accountability and expanding partnerships through evidence-based advocacy.

Presentations during the training were delivered by Global TB Caucus Deputy Chairman Hon. Warren Entsch, the NDOH technical team led by Secretary Pascoe Kase, the World Health Organisation (WHO) PNG Office, the Department of Treasury and the Parliamentary Media Service.

Sessions focused on political advocacy, the growing burden of TB and drug-resistant TB, financing opportunities, economic returns on TB investment and the use of media platforms and communication tools to support nationwide advocacy campaigns.

In his closing remarks, Minister for Health Hon. Elias Kapavore, MP, reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to strengthening partnerships, political leadership and sustained national action towards eliminating TB in the country.
