Past: First elected to the 2nd House of Assembly for Namatanai Open seat in the 1968 general elections. Elected Deputy Speaker and Public Accounts Committee-Vice Chairman and Leader of Government Business between 1968-1972. Founded and remained Leader of People's Progress Party from November 1970 till exit from national politics in June 1997. Re-elected to the 3rd House of Assembly 1st National Parliament in the 1972 General Elections for the same seat. Appointed Minister for Finance 1972-1977. Re-elected to 2nd National Parliament in the 1977 General Elections for the same seat. Appointed Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Primary Industry from 1977-1978. Elected Prime minister from 1980-1982 in a successful vote-of-no-confidence. Appointed member of the Privy Council in 1981. Re-elected to the 3rd National Parliament in the 1982 General Elections for the same seat. Appointed Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance and Planning after another successful vote of no confidence in 1985. In a cabinet reshuffle, re-appointed Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade and Industry from 1986-1987. Re-elected to 4th National Parliament for same seat in the 1987 General Elections. Appointed Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade and Industry from 1987-1988. Was Deputy Opposition Leader from 1988-1992. Re-elected to 5th National Parliament in the 1992 General Elections for the same seat. Appointed Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance and Planning from 1992-1994. In a re-shuffle, retained as Deputy Prime Minister but moved to Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade from January 1994-September 1994. Elected Prime Minister 1994-1997. Stood aside as prime minister briefly in early 1997 due to public pressure to allow for a commission of inquiry into the Sandline affair. Re-elected to the 8th National Parliament in the 2007 General Elections for the New Ireland Provincial seat as a People's Progress Party Candidate.

Achievements: Received the CBE in 1975, KBE in 1980 and GCMG in 1994 for his services to business, politics and government. Appointed member of the Privy Council in 1981. Part of a 5 member Eminent Persons Group appointed on a month long assignment to look at the Pacific Islands Forum and its secretariat in November 2003. Awarded the Grand Companion of the Order of Logohu (GCL) in September 2005.
