Pensions & Retirement Benefits Committee

Functions of the Committee

  1. The Committee shall be established at the commencement of each Parliament, called the Pensions and Retirement Benefits for the Members of Parliament.
  2. The Committee shall consist of six Members and the quorum of the Committee shall be three.
  3. The Committee shall have the powers;
    • To meet as and when required to fix the pensions and retirement benefits of Members of the National Parliament.
    • To ensure that the Parliamentary Members’ Retirement Benefits Act 1997 is properly administered by the Board established thereunder.
    • To examine the provisions of the Parliamentary Members’ Retirement Benefits Act 1997 and to examine the intention of the motion passed on 14th August 1980 by the Parliament, and to decide whether any changes need to be proposed.
    • To ensure that any determination is kept within the framework of pensions and retirement benefits applicable to others in the community and at the same time take into account the fact that the reason for giving Members these benefits is to give them no reason for using their office whilst Members to gain an unfair advantage over other members of the community.
    • To ensure that before each national election all necessary determinations have been made and the Parliamentary Members Retirement Benefits Board is ready to pay out monies to members retiring or who lose office in the election; and
    • To co-operate with the Salaries and Remuneration Commission to ensure that there is no overlap in determinations made by the two bodies.
