Suspended Parliament Clerk re-instated

Date Posted: April 13 2018

Suspended National Parliament Clerk, Vela Konivaro has been re-instated as the Clerk of Parliament after almost 4 years of legal battles before a leadership tribunal and the National Court.

Chief Justice, Sir Salamo Injia, Friday April 20 2018, ruled Vela’s suspension be set aside and he be re-instated forthwith.

Sir Salamo found that:

➢ Konivaro was not given the right or opportunity to be heard on the allegations before being investigated by the investigating team.
➢ There was breach of procedure. And found the entire referral process vitiated by the error.
➢ That the referral process was tainted by the fundamental errors in the referral process and that the Tribunal had wrongly dismissed Konivaro’s contentions on the point.

Upon taking office the returned Clerk pledged to work with the Speaker of Parliament Hon. Job Pomat to restore integrity and order in the Parliament.

Mr Konivaro was suspended in 2013 soon after a set of allegations against him was put to the National Executive Council.

Former Acting Clerk, Kala Aufa takes up the position of Acting Deputy Clerk to make way for Konivaro’s resumption.
